about this foodie journal

Kuwentuhan = conversations, often friendly, could be light or serious

Kainan = eatery, a gathering with food, a general term referring to eating

Roughly speaking, that’s what this is all about. Well, something is lost in translation, as always, but we make do with what we could convey. Owkei?

This is another blog of Leaflens, known offline as libay linsangan cantor. Yes, she’s a girl, and she likes it. Chos.

Originally titled “Kuwentuhan at Kainan,” she decided to reinvent the mood of this food blog. Since she will be discussing a variety of food-with-stories stuff here, it’s best to name it after the small eateries in the Philippines called karinderya which offers a host of dishes, drinks and meals in simpler but often tastier and more satisfying way, often open 24 hours a day. “Gutom lang ‘yan!” is a Filipino way of saying “You’re just hungry,” a friendly jest to mean one is being extremely emotional — whether being delusional, wacky, romantic, lovelorn, philosophical, depressed, intelligent or what have you. Yes, we Pinoys tend to associate every feeling and almost anything and everything with food.

A writer and image maker/storyteller raised and based in Metro Manila, Philippines, Leaflens combines all these personas to record snippets of her life connected with food, friends, family and the joys of eating plus other gourmet expeditions and culinary interactions. In short, this is her photo+food blog journal.

Oh, and that header photo is a shot of pork satay from one of her favorite  eateries in Marikina where she lives. She hearts barbecued stuff.

Don’t expect formal reviews of meals or food places (though she used to write those for a living eons ago, these times very rarely). This foodie photo journal contains honest-to-goodness from-the-gut reactions about food stuff told in the context of personal interactions with fellow foodies in her social and familial circles. It will also touch upon consumerism, capitalism, and any other ism which could be connected to food. Yes, even lesbianism.

While she tries to jot down thoughts in English, she slips into her natural tendencies of expression and sometimes blogs in Filipino sprinkled with a bit of metropolitan gayspeak and garnished with showbiz buzz stuff. Just find a translator, teh. Keri? Chos.

Her personal (lgbt-oriented) blog is at the original Leaflens mothership blog.

Her film reviews could be read at Takilya ni Leaflens.

Her musings on media and other pop culture stuff is at Culture Popper Leaflens.

You can get in touch with her at leaflens@gmail.com.
